EARNED PRIVILEGES PRACTICE STATION

When to Use Free Play

Free Play helps when an older child has completed a clear responsibility and earned a choice-based reward with limits that everyone understands before the wheel is spun.

HOME AND CHORE GOALS

Recognize completed responsibilities

Use the wheel after room cleanup, pet care, homework effort, helping with a family task, or completing an agreed routine. Keep the goal specific and realistic from the start.

SCREEN AND GAME TIME

Award a clearly limited bonus

Add approved choices such as extra device minutes, choosing a game, selecting the family movie, or leading the next round. Set the duration and device rules before spinning.

WEEKEND FREE CHOICE

Offer freedom within safe boundaries

Build a wheel with adult-approved activities, creative time, family entertainment, meal themes, or low-cost outings so the child earns meaningful choice without taking over the plan.

Grown-up rule: agree on the goal, timing, duration, and boundaries before the spin. Never randomize food, water, rest, bathroom access, affection, medicine, safety, accommodations, discipline, grades, or any other basic need or high-stakes outcome.

EARNED PRIVILEGE SYSTEM FIELD NOTE

How to Keep a Privileges Wheel Fair

Free Play works best when the goal is achievable, every option has been approved, and the timing and limits of each privilege are understood before the wheel begins.

Agree on the choices together

Build the wheel with privileges the child actually values and the adult can realistically provide. Remove choices that do not fit the schedule, budget, household rules, child’s age, or current circumstances.

Define every limit in advance

Explain how long extra screen time lasts, when a later bedtime applies, what “skip a chore” means, and which activities are available. The wheel chooses from the approved options—it does not erase boundaries.

Honor the earned result

Celebrate the completed responsibility and provide the selected privilege within the agreed limits. Avoid changing the rules afterward or removing an earned reward as an unrelated punishment.
