ACCESS ACROSS THE LAB

Accessibility at Spin the Wheel Lab

Spin the Wheel Lab is designed to make choosing, customizing, and presenting a wheel easier for more people across different devices, input methods, and accessibility settings.

Accessibility is ongoing work. This page explains the features currently supported, the areas we continue to improve, and how to report a barrier.

KEYBOARD ACCESS Buttons, links, fields, and supported presentation controls can be operated without relying only on a pointer.
MOTION PREFERENCES Supported interface effects respond to reduced-motion preferences.
CLEAR FEEDBACK Labels, status messages, visible results, and optional sound help communicate what the wheel is doing.
No blanket compliance claim: Spin the Wheel Lab does not currently claim independent accessibility certification or complete conformance with a specific WCAG level.

OUR APPROACH

Make the choice clear—not harder to reach

Accessibility at Spin the Wheel Lab means considering how people understand the interface, reach its controls, receive feedback, and complete a spin across different browsers, devices, and input methods.

UNDERSTAND

Use clear names and instructions

Controls should explain what they do, headings should organize the experience, and important instructions should be available as text instead of depending only on decoration or motion.

OPERATE

Support more than one input method

Core buttons, links, fields, and supported presentation controls are designed for keyboard interaction as well as mouse, pointer, and touch input.

PERCEIVE

Communicate beyond a single cue

Labels, visible text, status messages, winner displays, optional sounds, and device-supported feedback can work together to explain what is happening.

ADAPT

Respect device and browser settings

Supported interface effects respond to reduced-motion preferences, while responsive layouts adjust the wheel and controls for different screen sizes.

KEEP YOUR HANDS ON THE KEYS

Keyboard access and shortcuts

Standard controls such as buttons, links, and form fields are intended to support keyboard navigation. Overlay Mode also includes shortcuts for running a wheel without repeatedly reaching for a pointer.

Move through the interface

Use Tab and Shift + Tab to move between supported interactive controls. Use Enter or Space to activate a focused button or link according to normal browser behavior.

OVERLAY MODE SHORTCUTS

Run the round from the keyboard

These wheel commands apply while Overlay Mode is active and focus is not inside a text field or another editable control.

  • Space OR Enter
Spin the wheel Start a new spin when no winner window is open.
  • Esc
Close or exit Close the displayed result or leave Overlay Mode when supported.
  • P
Pin the winner Add the displayed result to the Winner’s Vault.
  • Delete OR Backspace
Remove the winner Remove the displayed result from the active wheel.
  • U
Undo Restore a recent supported wheel change.
  • M
Open Multi-pick Prepare several automated selections.
  • E
Announce the end-of-round winner Use the supported winner action when team scoring is active.
Shortcuts are active when Overlay Mode is open, the relevant command is available, and focus is outside an editable field.
Shortcuts pause while typing so entering names, titles, messages, or other text does not accidentally trigger a wheel command.

LESS MOTION WHERE SUPPORTED

Reduced-motion support

Spin the Wheel Lab checks the motion preference reported by the visitor’s device or browser. Supported decorative effects are reduced or removed when the preference is set to reduce motion.

What the preference changes

Reduced-motion support focuses on interface effects that are not necessary to understand or operate the wheel.

REDUCED OR REMOVED

Decorative interface motion

  • Supported pulsing and attention effects
  • Supported promotional transitions
  • Supported modal entrance animations
  • Supported celebration and onboarding effects
  • Other nonessential transitions where implemented
MAY STILL REMAIN

Motion central to the wheel experience

  • The main wheel rotation used to present a result
  • Some interactive behavior provided by the browser
  • Motion inside third-party or platform-controlled interfaces
  • Effects not yet connected to the reduced-motion setting

How the preference is detected

The site uses the browser’s prefers-reduced-motion: reduce media setting. Visitors normally control this preference through their operating system or browser accessibility settings.

Current limitation: reduced motion does not currently mean a completely motion-free wheel. The main wheel spin remains a moving result presentation. If that motion creates a barrier, please report it so we can better understand the needed alternative.

MAKE THE RESULT READABLE

Visual readability and contrast

The interface uses visible labels, headings, status messages, and structured controls to help people understand the wheel without depending only on color, decoration, or motion.

TEXT & STRUCTURE

Instructions stay available as text

Important controls and guidance use visible words rather than requiring visitors to interpret an image, color, or animation without supporting text.

WINNER FEEDBACK

Results appear in a dedicated display

A winner is communicated through visible result text and supported interface feedback instead of relying only on the wheel pointer’s final position.

RESPONSIVE LAYOUT

Controls adapt to available space

The wheel and its control areas use responsive layouts intended to remain usable across desktop, tablet, and mobile screen sizes.

COLOR CHOICES

Segment text can use light or dark styling

Wheel creators can choose supported text and segment colors to improve readability for a particular wheel design and background.

No automatic guarantee: customization tools do not guarantee that every creator-selected color, texture, image, label, or combination will meet a particular contrast standard. Review the completed wheel before presenting it to others.

SEE IT, HEAR IT, OR KEEP IT QUIET

Sound, voice, and device feedback

Audio and device feedback can add information and energy to a spin, but they are optional. The selected result remains visible on screen rather than being communicated through sound alone.

WHEEL SOUNDS

Adjust or silence spin audio

Supported controls allow wheel and winner sounds to be adjusted or turned off. Device volume, browser permissions, and autoplay rules can also affect what is heard.

WINNER VOICE

Use optional spoken results

Supported wheels can announce the winner with an available device voice. Voice choices and pronunciation depend on the browser, operating system, installed voices, and selected language.

DEVICE FEEDBACK

Use haptics where supported

Some devices and wheel modes may provide vibration or haptic feedback. Availability varies by hardware, browser, operating system, and device settings.

Availability can vary

  • Browser audio rules: some browsers block sound until the visitor interacts with the page.
  • Voice support: voice names, languages, quality, and pronunciation vary by device.
  • Haptic feedback: vibration and tactile feedback are not available on every device or browser.
  • System settings: mute controls, volume, accessibility preferences, and device permissions may override wheel settings.

WHAT WE’RE STILL WORKING ON

Current accessibility limitations

Transparency includes explaining where the experience may still create difficulty. The following limitations can vary by wheel, feature, browser, device, and customization.

  • Main wheel motion
Reduced-motion settings limit supported decorative effects, but the main wheel rotation remains part of presenting a result. A completely motion-free result mode is not currently claimed.
  • Large entry lists
When a wheel contains more than 75 entries, labels are hidden on the wheel because individual segments become too small to read. Entries remain available through the editor and winner result.
  • Creator-selected designs
Custom colors, textures, stickers, images, and long labels can create low contrast or visual clutter. The creator must review the completed wheel’s readability.
  • Voice and pronunciation
Available voices and pronunciation depend on the browser, operating system, installed voices, and language support. Spoken results may not pronounce every name correctly.
  • Haptic feedback
Vibration and tactile feedback depend on the device and browser. They may be unavailable, blocked, or affected by system settings.
  • Browser differences
Keyboard behavior, speech features, focus handling, audio, full-screen modes, and other capabilities can vary between browsers and devices.
  • Third-party interfaces
Shopify account, checkout, payment, and other externally operated experiences may have accessibility behavior controlled by their respective providers.

FOUND A BLOCKED PATH?

Report an accessibility barrier

If a feature prevents you from understanding, navigating, operating, or completing a task, tell us what happened. Specific details help us reproduce the problem and investigate a useful fix.

HELPFUL REPORT DETAILS
